OLIVIER ASSAYAS » CARLOS
A cinematic monster of 330 minutes. One 20 minutes intermission. Carlos, a self-defined terrorist pin-up, plays hopscotch with every Middle Eastern and European country, killing many along the way, in search of ‘glory.’ See it.

GO SEE THIS.

So many aspects of Tamra Davis’ new documentary on Jean-Michel Basquiat inspired/interested me. The film is centered around an unreleased interview she did at the L’Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills. I highly recommend seeing it. A few things that stuck out to me in no order »
The best summarization of what others believed Basquiat was trying to express through his work:
Get with it!
See the complexity of our culture!
I’ll give you a few hints…
New York City// Great vintage footage of JMB’s studio on Greene + Prince, his apartment on Crosby + Prince and loft on Great Jones + Bowery - right in my orbit; food mainstays The Odeon and Dean & Deluca
Gray// Had no idea Vincent Gallo was in JMB’s first band
Fashion// The metaphor in JMB’s Armani suits; Bruno Bischofberger’s lime linen Arny’s jacket - the cult French clothing establishment
Hawaii// During times of mounting pressure, personal and professional, JMB would head to Hawaii to clear his mind and work. Similar story of another loved/hated contemporary great
Creative Process// Despite going out every night, JMB had great focus and worked in solitude - arguably the no.1 habit of highly creative people. This reminded me of my previous Einstein quote; the importance of devouring popular culture not only as a source of inspiration but in JMB’s case, the subject matter for artistic content
Music// Loved how Davis made a point in explaining how music was such an integral part of his creative process. It is hard for me to work or be creative without listening to music; Mike D and Ad-Rock were the music coordinators
Competition// A lot of time was spent discussing JMB’s competitive nature, especially with Julian Schnabel. He wanted to be the #1 artist in the world, an unusual aspiration for an artist at the time
